Morgens geht es mit dem Bus von York nach Helmsley und nach etwa 1,5 Stunden Fahrt starten wir mittags bei schönem Wetter mit den obligatorischen Bildern am Startpunkt auf dem Marktplatz in Helmsley. Kamera? Funktioniert. Check. 😉
Der Weg aus dem Örtchen führt gen Westen leicht bergan und bereits nach etwa einer Stunde kommt Rievaulx Abbey in Sicht, in der zwischen 1132 und 1538 in der Spitze etwa 650 Mönche lebten und arbeiteten. Wir statten der Abbey keinen Besuch ab und laufen über Cold Kirby weiter in Richtung Sutton Bank. Sutton Bank ist ein etwa dreihundert Meter hoher Hügel, der einen phantastischen Ausblick in die umliegende Landschaft der Vales of York und Mowbray bietet.
An einem seiner Hänge liegt das Kilburn White Horse. 1857 wurde dieses Pferd in den Hang geschnitten und mit weißem Kalksteinbruch gefüllt. Es gilt als größte und nördlichste Hügelfigur Englands.
Da unsere erste Unterkunft das B&B „Church Farm“ in Kilburn ist, laufen wir vom Pferd aus den Hügel hinunter und anderthalb Meilen bis in den Ort. Nach einer heißen Dusche und ein paar Minuten „die Beine hochlegen“ geht es zum Abendessen in einen nahegelegenen Pub.
From York it took about 1,5 hours by bus to get to Helmsley. Weather was nice and we took the mandatory pictures at the starting point of the Cleveland Way. Camera? Working. Check. 😉
Leaving Helmsley the path slightly climbs to the west and about one hour later Rievaulx Abbey comes into view. Up to 650 monks lived and worked there between 1132 and 1538. We do not take a detour to the abby and continue walking towards Sutton Bank via Kirby. Sutton Bank is a relatively large and well known hill in that area. At about 980 feet height it provides excellent views over the Vales of York and Mowbray.
On the southern flank of Sutton Bank there is the „Kilburn White Horse“, a hill figure that was cut into the flank and filled with white limestone chips. It is said to be the largest and northernmost hill figure of England.
B&B „Church Farm“ is the first accommodation so we descent along Kilburn White Horse and walk about 1,5 miles to reach Kilburn. After having a hot shower and relaxing for some time we have dinner in a nearby pub.
